SANTA CLARA, Calif. — On this week's edition of the Bronco Weekly Sports Wrap, hosts and student-athletes Denzel Johnson and Nici Gilday bring you the latest in Santa Clara University Bronco sports. As we march on in April, Monday-Wednesday marks the first of the West Coast Conference spring championships.
Men's and women's golf are down at the Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif. vying for the WCC crown. The men's team is coming off a second place finish at the championships last year, its best result since 1997. EYEBRONCO caught up with Carlos Briones, Gio Gandionco and head coach Rob Miller to preview the event. Women's golf hits the links with four other teams in its quest for the championship. EYEBRONCO heard from Annie Freman, Meghan Shain and head coach Krystal Kelly prior to the event.
The teams wrap up play with the final round Wednesday. Best of luck to both men's and women's golf down the homestretch.
Softball traveled to the East Bay and took two of three from Saint Mary's over the weekend. Ciara Gonzales kicked things off with a one-hit shutout on Saturday. EYEBRONCO spoke with Gonzales about her performance. The Broncos travel to Cal on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before continuing WCC action at San Diego on Saturday.
Baseball took down San Jose State in a midweek game at Schott Stadium on Tuesday before heading to Pepperdine where they were swept in a three-game series. The Broncos head back to the field Tuesday to take on Stanford at 6 p.m. at home. They'll take a break from conference play over the weekend as they travel to No. 8 TCU for a three-game series starting Friday.
Men's tennis split a pair of WCC matches last weekend. They took down Saint Mary's in Moraga but fell to Pacific. They will play three times this week starting Wednesday vs. Sacramento State at 3 p.m. They will then wrap up regular season action vs. Gonzaga on Saturday and Portland on Sunday. Both matches start at noon and Sunday is the team's Senior Day.
Women's rowing will face Saint Mary's on Saturday for the final tune up before WIRAs and the WCC Championships.
Men's rowing competed at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The men's second Varsity 8 Boat picked up victories on both days of the event. The crew's next race is in two weeks at the WIRA Championships in Lake Natoma.
Sand volleyball was down in Hermosa Beach for the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge over the weekend. They fell to No. 1 USC and LMU. On Wednesday the Broncos will travel to Cal for a 3 p.m. match and then host Saint Mary's in Los Gatos at 3 p.m. on Friday.
Women's water polo dropped a pair of conference matches on the road over the weekend to Cal Baptist and San Diego State. They are back at it Friday at 3:30 p.m. vs. LMU and Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. Azusa Pacific for Senior Day at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
The women's tennis team fell to Saint Mary's on Friday but sent the seniors off in style with a victory over Pacific on Saturday's Senior Day. They finish the regular season at Gonzaga on Saturday at 11 a.m. and at Portland on Sunday at 11 a.m.
Track continues its spring campaign this week at the Mt. SAC relays. Women's runners Mary Kriege and Grayson Murphy each set school records at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in the team's last competition.
