Women's Rowing Competes at WIRA's; Takes Silver in Women's Pair

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's rowing competed at the WIRA Championships in Lake Natoma from April 24-26. The Broncos' top finish came in the women's pair where they finished second. They wrap-up the season Sat., May 16 at the WCC Championships, also in Lake Natoma.

"This was a tough weekend as were coming off of a lot of injuries and all boats were struggling to regain lost boat speed," said Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz. "There were some bright spots like the silver medal in the women's pair for captain Molly Walker '16 and freshman Emelia Hamilton '18. There was also some overall improvement in the Varsity and JV racing times from the heat to the final, but we're still working to regain what we lost over the previous two weeks."

The list of injured Broncos is long but the team is not letting that hold them back from getting to where they want to be.

"We're still dealing with some critical injuries like JV stroke Sara Smith is out for the week nursing a sore back and Varsity coxswain Hollynd Boyden nursing a concussion," added Wojtkiewicz. "Varsity five seat Kelby Nardoni is also out for the week with a sore back. We're adapting and making changes on the fly, and the practice rows the past few days have actually been fairly productive with some really solid and focused technical improvements by all crews. With only 12 practice days left until WCCs we're really racing to get back the speed we had earlier in the season, but with continued focused effort over the next week and a half, I think we can get there."
