MADERA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team concluded day one of the West Coast Conference Championships held at the Riverbend Golf Club in Madera, Calif.
The Broncos finished day one in fifth place after consecutive rounds of 317 as a team, 10 strokes behind Portland who is in fourth place. Head coach Polly Schulze said that the team's goal was to break 320 in each round of the WCC Championships and they are well on their way to doing so.
"We accomplished two-thirds of our goal today," said Schulze. "Although we are disappointed that we are in fifth place, we are just trying to go out there any play to our ability. We have one more day in which we want to shoot better than 320, so we definitely have plenty to play for."
Jessica Lamberty and Courtney Dimpel-Composti each finished the first day with their two-round totals of 158. Lamberty carded rounds of 80 and 78 while Dimpel-Composti fired an opening round 75 followed by an 83 in round two. Her opening round 75 was a career-low round at the collegiate level.
Nikki Mack shot 80 in both rounds while reigning WCC Co-Player of the Month, Meggie Fagundes, carded rounds of 82 and 81. Candice Palmer rounded out the Bronco scoring with her rounds of 94 and 78. The 16-shot difference between rounds one and two for Palmer was the most by any participant on day one.
Carolina Llano of Pepperdine University leads the tournament going into Tuesday's final 18 holes after a 70-72 - 142 for a 1-stroke lead over teammate Katherine Hull and a 4-shot lead over Pepperdine's Lindsey Wright and the University of San Francisco's Lisa Chen who were both at 146.
The Waves hold an 8-stroke margin over USF in the team race, while Gonzaga is third at 613 for an 11-stroke lead over the University of Portland at 624.
The Broncos will conclude their 2002-2003 season with the final round of the conference championships Tuesday morning in Madera.
