SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team added depth to its team for the 2002-2003 season Tuesday when head coach Polly Schulze announced the signings Meggie Fagundes, Nikki Mack, Candice Palmer and Deanna Slaman to National Letters of Intent.
Fagundes comes to Santa Clara from Atwater High School where she graduated with a 3.88 G.P.A. She has enrolled in the newly created Environmental Studies program on the Mission Campus in addition to being a member of the golf team. Her long term goals include becoming a lawyer and serving as an agricultural lobbyist within that same industry.
"Meggie in on board with us not only because of her golfing ability, but also for her drive, work ethic and leadership abilities," said Schulze. "She has achieved so much success in all areas of her life that I know she will bring the same intensity to achieving success as a Bronco."
Mack graduated in 2002 from St. Mary's Academy in Portland, Ore. with a 3.9 G.P.A. With a strong golfing background, Schulze is looking for Mack to have an immediate impact on the team.
" Nikki is a very strong player from a family with extremely strong golfing success," said Schulze. "Her three sisters were all captains of their collegiate golf teams and her brother is now a teaching pro in Oregon. I know that Nikki wants to continue that tradition and to make a mark of her own as a Bronco."
Palmer joins the Broncos following her graduation with a 3.5 G.P.A. from Amador Valley High School. Her new coach thinks that she will enter school with the focus and tenacity necessary to play at the collegiate level. Her experience in junior and amateur tournaments will most certainly pay off.
"Candice made it very clear to me about her quest to play for the Broncos," said Schulze. "She shows great focus when she plays and I have not doubt that she will work her way into our top five."
Slaman becomes part of the Santa Clara family after graduating from the Academy of Our Lady of Peace in San Diego, Calif. She finished school with a 3.7 G.P.A. and brings with her an enthusiasm that in contagious.
"Deanna has had the desire to attend and play for SCU for many years and we are glad that we are able to make that dream come true," said Schulze. "Deanna has a desire to help this program to reach it's true potential and we will welcome that kind of desire."
