Women's Soccer Wins Crucial Matchup with San Diego

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a crucial West Coast Conference showdown, Santa Clara women's soccer beat San Diego 3-0 Thursday night at Stevens Stadium to take sole possession of second place in the conference. With a victory in the regular season finale and a Pepperdine loss or tie, the Broncos will win the outright WCC title.

Kelsey Turnbow continued her torrid pace for Santa Clara (12-6-1, 7-1 WCC) with a goal and an assist. She has now scored in three of the last four matches. Kelcie Hedge also added a goal and an assist for the Broncos. It was her first goal with Santa Clara.

San Diego (8-10, 6-2 WCC) managed to put just one shot on goal during the match and relied heavily on goalkeeper Amber Michel who made five saves to keep them in the game.

The Broncos struck early to take a 1-0 lead that would be all the offense they needed. in the 19th minute Machaela George made a nice moved to get inside her defender and centered a pass to Turnbow who one-timed her shot inside the far post.

They added their second of the match in the 48th. Turnbow made a move away from the end line sent a left-footed ball into the box that Hedge headed inside the right post.

Maddy Gonzalez added a third goal for good measure in the 74th from just inside the top of the box. Hedge sent a long pass over the top to Gonzalez who took a touch before firing her shot inside the near post.

  • Santa Clara is now 18-8 all-time against San Diego.
  • The Broncos have outscored their opponents 20-3 during their six-match winning streak.
  • Santa Clara has gotten 35 of its 42 goals this season from underclassmen and 21 from freshmen.
  • The Broncos didn't make a substitution until the 62nd minute and made just three all night.
