Women's Soccer Moves on to Second Round of NCAA Tournament with Win at No. 19 Cal

HIGHLIGHTS: Goals by Arnardottir, Turnbow

BERKELEY, Calif. – In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Santa Clara women's soccer went on the road to top Cal 2-1 Saturday afternoon and advance to the second round.

The Broncos (14-6-1) jumped out to a quick lead and played with a man advantage for 87 minutes after a red card was issued to the Bears (13-6-1). Despite the advantage, Cal was able to keep it close and even tied the game in the first half.

The game-winner for Santa Clara came in the 64th minute off the foot of Kelsey Turnbow. She got the ball and dribbled inside the box before hitting a shot far post that made it 2-1.

In the third minute Maddy Gonzalez was taken down just outside the box and Indigo Gibson was given a red card for her tackle from behind. Gudrun Arnardottir took the chance and buried it in the back of the net to give the Broncos an early 1-0 lead.

Cal evened the score in the 27th on a penalty kick converted by Miranda Nild.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 18-22-7 all-time against Cal.
  • Cal had not given up more than one goal in a match all season. The Bears had allowed just nine goals entering the match.
  • Turnbow has scored the most goals by a Santa Clara freshman since Leslie Osborne also scored 13 in the 2001 season.
  • This was Santa Clara's 52nd NCAA Tournament victory. The Broncos are now 52-25 all-time.
  • The Broncos held the advantage in shots 17-7.
