Volleyball Falls in Four Sets at San Diego on Saturday

SAN DIEGO – Katie Lukes recorded a match-high 16 kills and Addie Picha chipped in 10 to help San Diego earn a 25-20, 25-19, 18-25, 25-19 victory against Santa Clara volleyball on Saturday.

Alexa Dreyer (13) and Allison Kantor (11) combined for 24 kills for the Broncos (6-22, 1-15) who had just a .207 attack percentage, but did post 12.0 total blocks at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Roxie Wiblin had nine kills and Anna Newsome posted 19 assists for the Toreros (15-10, 12-3) who won for the eighth time in their last nine outings, with the only blemish a loss last week at No. 1 BYU.

The Broncos, who fell to the Cougars on Thursday, had chances to claim either of the first two sets before finally breaking through in the third as Kantor and Dreyer had four kills each.

Santa Clara was within 15-13 in the fourth set, but San Diego pulled away, scoring six in a row, mostly on Bronco miscues. Kills by Wiblin and Picha were sandwiched around four Santa Clara attack errors.

The Broncos surrendered a 13-10 lead in the opening set, but managed to pull within a point 17-16. Lukes came through with a pair of kills that spurred a 4-0 run and Santa Clara was unable to recover.

Kantor had 10 digs to post a double-double.

NOTES
• Dreyer posted double-digit kills for the fourth time this season.
• Kantor posted her second straight double-double and sixth double-double of the season.
