BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Santa Clara picked up its fourth and fifth victories of the season to go about .500 with a record of 5-4 overall after defeating Concordia and California Baptist today at the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunner Invitational.
In the morning game, the Broncos came out on top of a high-scoring affair, dispatching Concordia 18-11.
Senior Jenny Knutson scored twice and junior Taylor Harkins put in one to put Santa Clara up 3-0 by the end of the first. Four more different goal scorers, including junior transfer Caitlin Espe, sophomore Marina Allen, senior Meg Zimmerman (two goals), and freshman Alison Norris each got on the board, and Harkins scored her second of the game to double the lead by half as Concordia scored three times in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, the Eagles matched the Broncos five goals, as senior Rochelle Stowe and sophomore Laura Espinosa joined in on the scoring to make it 14-8 overall in favor of Santa Clara. Freshman goalie Stephanie Clements came into the match with 2:27 left to play in the quarter as junior cage starter Wren White exited the game with seven blocks.
Knutson scored her third goal of the game, Harkins her fifth, and junior transfer Whitney Allen added two goals in the fourth quarter and Clements saved two of five shots to end the game at 18-11.
The afternoon game was much tighter, as the Broncos went on to win 8-6. Santa Clara again established a lead in the first quarter, going up 3-1 on the Lancers courtesy of goals from Harkins, Knutson (a five-meter penalty shot), and Whitney Allen.
Harkins scored again in the second period, and Cal Baptist matched her goal to finish the half at 4-2.
Harkins got her third goal of the game, and eighth of the day in the third quarter, but the Lancers scored four goals to take a one-goal lead going into the final eight minutes.
Determined not to let another game slip away in the fourth quarter, like what happened earlier in the season against Cal State East Bay, Knutson scored the tying goal early in the period and converted her second five-meter penalty shot of the day to take the lead. Marina Allen sealed the victory with a goal at 2:29 left to play. White made nine saves in the match.
