Santa Clara Takes Sixth Place at WWPA Championships

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team lost its final game of the 2010 season today, falling to Cal State East Bay, 9-8, in the Western Water Polo Association fifth place match today at the Hillman Aquatic Center at Cal State Bakersfield. The Broncos finish the season in sixth place in the WWPA with a 17-16 overall record.

Santa Clara received multi-goal games from senior Rochelle Stowe and junior Taylor Harkins. It was Stowe's third consecutive game with more than one goal.

The Pioneers scored first, but Harkins responded with two goals for the Broncos to take the lead for the first time

The two teams were never separated by more than goal until the third quarter when Cal State East Bay went up 8-6 with 4:51 to play in the quarter and the score remained that way until the fourth quarter.

Santa Clara opened the fourth quarter with two straight goals, one from sophomore Marina Allen at 6:40 and another from Stowe at 4:17. Just 20 seconds after Stowe's goal, the Pioneers found the back of the cage for the ninth time. The result would stand at the final buzzer.

Also scoring for the Broncos was juniors Caitlin Espe and Whitney Allen, senior Jenny Knutson.
