Santa Clara Picks Up Two Wins In Southern California

ORANGE, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team will be leaving southern California with two wins following a 12-7 victory over Cal State San Bernardino and 16-2 win over Chapman today.

Senior Rochelle Stowe scored five goals on the day, three coming against Cal State San Bernardino, giving her eight total goals for the weekend.

Stowe's classmate Meg Zimmerman also scored five goals, all of them coming against CSUSB.

The Broncos controlled the match against the Coyotes, taking a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and doubling it by half. Santa Clara retained a four-goal lead through the third and finished off the game with another four in the final quarter.

Stowe, along with her three goals, added two assists against CSUSB. Senior Jenny Knutson had two assists and three ejections drawn, while sophomore Laura Espinosa registered two kickouts drawn. Freshman Alison Norris and junior Amanda Miller each had a goal and junior goalie Wren White had seven blocks and two assists.

Against Chapman, the Broncos jumped out to a 5-0 lead before finally allowing a goal in the second quarter. Santa Clara then scored nine-straight goals to put the game away. Chapman's last goal came in the fourth quarter.

Junior Taylor Harkins scored three goals in the match while Stowe, junior transfer Whitney Allen, Knutson, and Norris scored twice. Scoring one goal each was junior transfer Caitlin Espe, sophomore Marina Allen, freshman Jamie Swartz, Espinosa, and sophomore Sarah Safir.

Knutson added four assists while both Espe and Safir had three each. Zimmerman drew three kickouts. White made three blocks in the first half, and freshman backup goalie also made three saves playing in the second half.

The Broncos, now 9-8 overall, return to Santa Clara to play Indiana next weekend.
