Camille Dyer: Pace and Race

Written by Ben Dines '15

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) chatted with junior Camille Dyer (CD) of the cross country/track team about physical intelligence, competition, and learning from her sport.

SCB: What was your offseason training like?

CD: My offseason training was pretty intense. I ran many miles (about 65-80 per week). I worked out twice almost every day. I rarely took a day off, but I made sure that I stayed smart physically. A few times a week I would do some weight training and core work.

The hardest part of summer training is doing it alone. Most sports require more than one person to practice, but you don't need a running buddy. Thankfully, I had a pretty good playlist to listen to on runs!

SCB: How would you relate running to your major?

CD: I'm majoring in accounting and information systems. Being the nerd that I am, I do math in my head all the time to figure out splits and pace conversions. All that extra practice has helped me sharpen my mathematical skills, which sort of helps in accounting!

SCB: What have you learned about yourself from running competitively?

CD: I've learned quite a few things. I like distance. It's weird, I know. I've been told. I get better results when I run more miles. I trained with that in mind this summer and I'm liking the results so far. Some runners will run 12 miles for their long run. I like to run 15+ if I can. It's my way of giving 110 percent. Another thing is the importance of the team. Everyone (non-runners) thinks cross-country is an individual sport, but it's not! When I'm out there running on a trail or racing on a course, I have my teammates in mind. I never want to let my team or my coaches down. I want to win races but it's even better when my team wins a meet. I race for me, my team, and my school. Oh yeah, my family too (love you mom!).

SCB: What are you looking forward to this year?

CD: Racing. The team is back and better than ever! Everyone is working hard and it's amazing because we're all doing it! It makes me so excited to see what we're capable of and how we're going to be against the other teams in the WCC.

Go Broncos!
