Sean Roe Looks Forward to Next Year

Dylan Lynch '16

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - SantaClaraBroncos.com (SCU) had the opportunity to talk to junior Sean Roe (SR) about the upcoming cross country season and the months leading up to it.  While he is going to have to balance work and training this summer, Roe has no doubt that he will show up to the fall season more prepared than ever.  Sean gives us a look at the rigorous training schedule and the "family legacy" he hopes to leave behind.

SCU: Going into your senior season, how do you plan to help your teammates in the offseason?

SR: The offseason is an exciting time for the team; men are separated from the boys. Summer offers a lot more down time for most people which allows for more time focused on running! Although our team will be physically separated throughout the summer, we are still very much spiritually connected. I plan to help my team by leading by example and showing up to the fall season in the best shape of my life. Felipe and Pete have designed an incredibly demanding summer training program and I can't wait to put in the work.

SCU: What is your training schedule going to look like for this summer?

SR: For me, I will be running between 65-75 miles a week. Some of our guys operate on higher mileage plans that extend upwards of 90 miles a week. Most days consist of 1-2 runs and/or cross training (bike, swim, elliptical << my favorite). I'll have to balance my running schedule around my work schedule this summer so I'll be running when the sun comes up and when it goes down likely!

SCU: As a senior, what impact do you want to leave on your teammates?

SR: First and foremost, I want to leave remembered as a fierce competitor and a contributor. But even more so, I want to leave a "family legacy" behind. Our team is blessed to be tight knit. We are a family and I want to help continue that. I've found in my competitive sports career that senior leadership is important to the health of the team. A healthy team runs fast and that's what we want, fast.

SCU: What would you say is your favorite part of running for Santa Clara?

SR: My most cherished part of my last three years has been running for a coach and for teammates that I respect. Getting to be a college athlete and more specifically, a Santa Clara athlete is a unique experience. Running is painful at times. Practices are early. Races mean testing your body to its absolute limits. How can one do any of those things if they do not respect their coach or team?

SCU: With a major in Operation Management Information Systems, what are your plans for after graduation?

SR: This next summer, I'm working for Cisco in San Jose. I guess we will see where that goes! I would like to travel to South America after graduation and work on my other major, Spanish! I could see myself living in California in the future and working in tech, although it's so expensive! I think I saw a cardboard box on the side of 880 sell for a million dollars last week...
