SANTA CLARA, Calif. - On get-away day at Schott Stadium, Santa Clara baseball lost to Pepperdine 9-6 behind a seven-run top of the seventh inning. Santa Clara moves to 19-18 overall and 2-10 in WCC play with the loss while the win puts Pepperdine at 24-16 overall and 7-5 in conference.

LHP Powell Fansler (5-3; 3.75) got the start for the Broncos and picked up a no-decision. He threw 5.2 innings while allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts. RHP Chris Mendoza (1-1; 5.53) picked up the loss while facing two batters and not recording an out. Offensively RF Greg Harisis went 2-4 with a double and two runs scored and CF Matt Ozanne was also 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI. C Quinton Perry stayed hot by going 1-2 with a walk and two RBI.

Santa Clara takes a break from midweek games and will return to the field Fri., April 27 vs. Saint Mary's at 6 p.m. at Schott Stadium.

Harisis led off the bottom of the first with a single to right field. LF Andrew Biancardi laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by the Pepperdine pitcher and put runners on second and third. CF Matt Ozanne grounded out weakly to third and didn't get the run home. Perry went right back through the middle for a two RBI single. Perry was gunned down attempting to steal second for the second out before DH T.J. Braff walked to extend the inning. 1B Drew Ozanne grounded out to third to end the inning with the Broncos ahead 2-0.

Pepperdine got two runners on for free in the top of the second when DH Matt Forgatch led off the inning with a walk and 3B Austin Davidson was hit by a pitch with one down. LF Bryan Langlois singled to right to load the bases for CF Matt Lelalich. Lelalich bunted into a fielder's choice to keep the bases loaded. Fansler got out of the jam with a chopper to second.

A walk to 2B Kyle DeMerritt and a single by 3B Matt Glomb started things for the Broncos in the bottom of the second. SS Justin Viele came up and sacrificed the runners to second and third. Harisis hit a grounder to third to make the score 3-0 and move the runner to third. Biancardi flew out to left for the third out.

RF Tony Cooper led off the top of the third with a single and scored on a double to left by 1B Sam Meyer. Forgatch tripled to right to make the score 3-2. A soft liner to second and a groundout to first base got Santa Clara out of the inning with a one run lead.

M. Ozanne hit a no-doubt home run over the batting cages in left field, his second home run in as many days, to get back one of the runs Pepperdine scored in the third.

RHP Chris Heckert, who entered the game in the top of the sixth, gave up an infield single to Cooper to start the top of the seventh. Cooper moved to second on a passed ball and then to third on a balk. Sever drew a four-pitch walk to put the tying run on base and RHP Chris Mendoza came in to pitch for the Broncos. Meyer single through the left side to bring Pepperdine within one at 4-3. With runners on first and second and still no one out, Forgatch worked the count full before taking a walk to load the bases. Mendoza was pulled and RHP Brock Simon came in to try and escape the jam. C Miles Silverstein struck out looking on a curveball for the first out. Davidson followed with a bases-clearing triple to right-center to put Pepperdine up 6-4. A passed ball extended the lead to three. The inning continued as Langlois drew a walk and after Glealich flew out to center, SS Zach Vincej smoked a home run to left-center off the scoreboard to extend the lead to 9-4. RHP James Smith entered the game and got a lineout to first to end the inning.

Viele singled to start the bottom of the seventh and Harisis followed with a double to right-center. Biancardi came to the plate and struck out before M. Ozanne singled up the middle to score a run and put runners on the corners. Perry struck out swinging for the second out. M. Ozanne was caught stealing but got in a rundown long enough for Harisis to score and make the score 9-6.

In the bottom of the ninth Harisis led off with a check-swing strike out. Pinch hitter Stephen Takahashi fouled out to first on the first pitch he saw. The Broncos last chance, M. Ozanne, drew a walk to extend the game. Perry went down swinging to end the game and give the Waves a 9-6 win.
