Baseball Falls in Opener Against BYU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In its West Coast Conference home-opener, Santa Clara baseball fell to BYU by a final of 3-1 The loss puts the Broncos at 8-19 overall and 0-7 in conference action while the Cougars are now 15-14 and 3-4 in conference.

The two teams return to the field tomorrow, Fri., April 5 at 6 p.m. and wrap-up the series on Sat., April 6 at 1 p.m. at Schott Stadium.

Reece Karalus (0-6, 7.99) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 7.0 innings pitched. Karalus allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with one walk and a career-high eight strikeouts. The offense was led by Greg Harisis, who was 2-4 with a double and a RBI. Matt Ozanne was 1-4 with a run scored while Justin Viele was 1-4.

Desmond Poulson (4-0, 1.94) started for BYU and picked up a win while tossing a complete game. Poulson allowed one run on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Jacob Hannemann led the offense by going 3-4 with a double, a triple, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Kelton Caldwell was 2-4 with a triple while Trace Hansen was 1-4 with a RBI.

Hannemann led off the game with a double to right center to put Karalus in trouble early. Hansen fouled out but Hannemann went to third on a passed ball with just one out. Karalus escaped the inning by getting back-to-back strikeouts.

Viele was the first Bronco to reach base when he singled just out of the reach of the shortstop to lead off the home half of the fourth. Viele promptly stole second on a close play. M. Ozanne went down swinging for the first out of the inning. Harisis recorded an infield single to put runners on the corners, but Quinton Perry hit into an inning ending double play.

Hannemann hit a stand-up triple with two down in the top of fifth. Hansen followed with a chopper up the middle for a RBI single that broke the scoreless tie.

For the second consecutive inning BYU hit a triple with two out, this one by Caldwell. Karlaus got his eighth strikeout of the game to end the inning and keep the score at 1-0.

Hayden Nielsen reached on an error with one out in the top of the seventh and Hannemann followed with a home run to right field to extend the Cougar lead to 3-0. Karalus bounced back to end the inning.

M. Ozanne legged out an infield single to start the bottom of the seventh for the Broncos. Harisis followed with a RBI double just out of the reach of a diving Hannemann in left center to get Santa Clara on the board.

Poulson had a 1-2-3 ninth to finish out the complete game victory.
