Four-Run First Sinks Bronco Baseball at Cal Poly

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Taking a trip down the coast, Santa Clara baseball dropped a midweek game to Cal Poly by a final score of 7-2. The Broncos are now 9-25 overall while the Mustangs are 25-9.

The Broncos return to the field on Fri., April 19 at 6 p.m. vs. San Diego in the first game of a three game series at Schott Stadium.

Jake Steffens (0-3, 7.71) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 2.0 innings. Steffens allowed five runs on six hits with one walk and no strikeouts. The offense was led by C.J. Jacobe who was 1-1 with two RBI as a pinch hitter. Casey Munoz added a hit and a run scored while Ben Wright was 1-2 with a double.

Casey Bloomquist (2-0, 5.21) started for Cal Poly and got a win in 6.1 innings. Bloomquist allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. The offense was led by Jordan Ellis who was 3-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a RBI. Denver Chavez was 2-4 with a double and three runs scored while Jimmy Allen added a hit, a run and two RBI.

Cal Poly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Chavez led off the inning with a single to right and Ellis followed with a bunt single to put two runners on. Allen singled through the left side to knock in the first run. Nick Torres followed with a single that loaded the bases and Brian Mundell was hit by a pitch to force in a run. David Armendariz hit a sac fly and Mark Mathias had a RBI groundout before the Broncos could get out of the inning.

The Mustangs added another run in the bottom of the second to make the score 5-0. Chavez hit a one out double down the right field line and moved to third on an infield single by Ellis. Allen hit into a fielder's choice to knock home another run.

Santa Clara got on the board in the seventh to cut the deficit to three. Munoz led off the inning with a single through the left side and would move to second on a wild pitch with one out. Kyle DeMerritt walked on four pitches and Jacobe pinch hit in the DH spot and doubled to right field to knock in his first two runs of the season.

Cal Poly answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh to get the lead back out to five runs at 7-2. Elliot Stewart was hit by a pitch to start the frame and Chavez reached on a fielder's choice. Ellis followed with a triple to center field. After Allen walked to put runners on the corners, Torres hit a sac fly to left.

The Broncos went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game.
