Stevie Berman Back in Action

Stevie Berman Back in Action

Written by Julia Baribeau '17

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - After a strong freshman season, sophomore catcher Stevie Berman (SB) sat out the beginning of this season due to injury. Now fully recovered, he is back on the diamond and talked with Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) about his team and what is to come.

SCB: How does it feel being back on the field after being out due to injury?

SB: Coming back from an injury is always super exciting. Watching all my teammates grind through the whole fall and seeing them compete was very bittersweet because I knew I could not help them. My teammates were so supportive of me and I knew they were by my side the entire time so coming back was a pretty awesome moment.

SCB: How do you feel the team has grown thus far in the season?

SB: Our team is really young and we have a lot of new guys who had to become accustomed with how everything is run. With that being said, our team has grown so much. All the new guys have done such a good job in grinding and working every day to help us win. We have great leaders, which consist of three seniors and a very experienced junior class. This team is very talented and will surprise a lot of people this year.

SCB: What is your goal for the rest of the season?

SB: Our goal for the rest of the season is to make the WCC tournament by finishing top 4 in conference play. This is a special team where we all believe and trust in everyone. I am very excited for the second half of this season to shock a lot of people, and to continue playing with my teammates that I love.

SCB: Who is one teammate you look up to and why?

SB: I really look up to Jose Vizcaino Jr. Jose and I are really good friends and we normally room together on road games so I've gotten to know him quite a bit. The way he has grown and matured in such a short time period is amazing. His leadership and talent is why this team is so very special. He's one of my best friends on this team because of how competitive and fun he is. Jose is a special player.

SCB: Is there any opponent you are looking forward to playing, and if so, why?

SB: Not really, for us, focusing on playing our game instead of our opponent is really important. Our opponents are really talented, but so are we. I think not worrying whom we play, but rather how we play, will help us in the long run.
