LOMPOC, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's golf team brought their 2006-07 season to a close Tuesday with the final round of the WCC Championships at the La Purisima Golf Course. After beginning the day in third place with an eight stroke lead over Gonzaga, and a five stroke lead over Portland, the Zags leapfrogged both the Pilots and the Broncos, leaving Santa Clara in fourth place, just one stroke behind.

"We're obviously disappointed," said head coach Polly Schulze. "By the time we teed off today it was pretty windy out there, and that could have been the difference. For the past few years, we've really held that third spot, but it just wasn't our day today."

Freshman Jamie Nonaka finished tied for tenth overall, with a final round of 83 and a combined score of 238 to lead the Broncos. Hilaire Fouts finished just a stroke behind Nonaka, in sole possession of 13th place with a combined 239 following a team-best final round of 80, and Samantha Trask finished tied for 14th at 240 after a final round 81.

Rounding out the Broncos contingent were freshman Erin Sullivan and Corey Utsurogi. Sullivan had a tough final round, carding 87 and finishing 22nd with a combined score of 252. Utsurogi finished tied for 24th with a final round of 82 after a difficult day on Monday.

Despite the finish, Schulze was very optimistic about the 2007-08 season.

"This year we learned that we have the ability to grind out good rounds when we stay strong out there," Schulze said. "The biggest thing has been that when we've had our bad days, we've never given up on our goals. We'll have a strong recruiting class coming in next year, so I definitely think our team will turn some heads."
