EAGLE, Idaho --The Santa Clara women's golf team wrapped up their first tournament of the fall season, finishing in a tie for 8th place at the Boise State Invitational with a combined score of 950 (311, 321, 318).
Senior Samantha Trask was the leader for Santa Clara, and finished in a tie for 14th place after turning in rounds of 74, 76 and a final round of 78. On Monday, Trask showed off some fancy work with her putter, 1-putting seven greens. Unfortunately, Tuesday's greens weren't as easy, but Trask still managed to finish in the 70s.
Sophomore Ella Sanman, after carding rounds of 84 and 88 on Monday matched Trask's 78 in her final round on Tuesday. After a triple-bogey on the 2nd hole, Sanman went on a roll, turning in six straight pars. Sanman attributed her performance to her ability to stay focused and take advantage of her experience on the course from the previous two rounds.
Defending champion Megan Stoddart and junior Corey Utsurogi got their seasons started on positive notes as well. Though not headlining the leader board, both performed well under pressure to save rounds which got off to rocky starts. In Tuesday's round, Utsurogi started +5 and battled the rest of the round to finish at only +9.
The University of Nebraska won the event, with a combined score of 884. The only other WCC in attendance, Portland, finished right behind Santa Clara, in 10th place with a combined score of 952.
With their first tournament complete, the women's team will now travel to Vancouver, B.C., to participate in the inaugural University of British Columbia Invitational, which begins next Monday, October 16th.
