Region's Best Golf Teams Converge at Stanford's Golf Course This Weekend

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Fresh off a victory over West Coast Conference rival BYU last weekend, which also included out-playing top-100 opponents Cal State Fullerton and Nevada, the Santa Clara University women's golf team will tee it up against the region's top teams at the 2013 Peg Barnard Invitational this weekend.

Hosted by Stanford on its on-campus golf course, the Cardinal are hosting a 13-team field which includes No. 7 Washington, No. 9 UC Davis, No. 20 Stanford, No. 42 California and No. 62 San Jose State. Different from most collegiate events, the tournament will consist of just two rounds and will be played over the weekend. Saturday's opening 18-holes will begin with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m.

SCU true freshman Ashley Noda (Roseville, Calif. / St. Francis) and sophomore Kaci McCartan (Plano, Tex. / Ursuline Academy) both finished inside the top 30 at last week's event, The Gold Rush at Yorba Linda Country Club. Senior Balbina Guajardo (Monterrey, Mexico / American School Foundation of Monterrey), who fired a final-round 77 on Tuesday in in Orange County, was named a preseason All-WCC player on Wednesday.

"We turn around and go to Stanford this weekend," SCU head coach Krystal Kelly recently told SantaClaraBroncos.com, referring to the Broncos' upcoming stretch of playing in four consecutive tournaments. "That is a challenge for everyone, for example the five players that were (at Yorba Linda) will have the day off (Wednesday) and the other five that were not here will be out at (Boulder Ridge) practicing. This is a crucial stretch for us the next four weeks, but we all know that and are ready for it."
