Carissa Theis Punches Out 13 as SCU Softball Wins Again

MORAGA, Calif. – Carissa Theis (pictured) struck out 13 and freshman Ashley Haney hit her second collegiate homerun to power Santa Clara University's softball team past Seattle University 3-2 Sunday in Moraga. The Broncos win two-straight to close out the 2012 PCSC Crossover Tournament hosted by SMC.

"I'm very happy to see our players approach the games this weekend the way they did," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "We believe in ourselves and we stuck to our game plan. Credit the freshmen for coming out and giving us a lift, playing as competitively as they have."

Theis, a junior transfer from New Mexico State and graduate of Leigh High School in San Jose, moves her record to 2-2. She struck out the side in the second inning en route to punching out seven in the first three frames. She retired the Redhawks in order in the eighth to position SCU for the victory.

"I was really happy to see Carissa bear down and keep her composure," said Mize. "She got out of a jam early then shut them down with strikeouts and groundballs. She kept us in the game the whole time."

Haney hit a solo homer to put the Broncos on the board and Alyssa Jepsen added an RBI-single during a two-run third inning, which put the Broncos up 2-0. With the game tied 2-2 going into the bottom of the eighth, it was Briana Knight coming through with a game-winning double to leftfield.

Santa Clara (3-12) posts back-to-back wins in Moraga, after knocking off Northern Colorado 8-7 on Saturday.

"We want to build off these wins," said Mize. "We are going to compete with anybody this year. Our early-season schedule has prepared us for this stretch coming up. We are focusing on playing sharp for seven innings next week against San Jose State and Southern Utah."

Mize is referring to next weekend's San Jose State University's Super Series at Spartan Softball Stadium, where San Jose State and Southern Utah are on the schedule twice Saturday and Sunday, March 3-4.
