Pitching Dominates Friday's Doubleheader in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Santa Clara University's softball team was held to one run during Friday's series-opening doubleheader with Sacramento State. Game scores went 3-0 and 2-1 in favor of the Hornets. The two Northern California teams will continue the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) series on Saturday.

Santa Clara (7-29; 2-4 PCSC) used hits from Alyssa Jepsen and Kelly Scribner to take a breif 1-0 lead in the first inning of Game Two, after being shutout in the opener. However, Sacramento State (19-13; 2-4 PCSC) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, and despite a complete-game three-hitter by SCU starter Jessica Turner, the Hornets used teriffic pitching on their end to post a 2-1 win.

All-PCSC senior pitcher Shelby Voelz threw a three-hit shutout in Game One. She walked three and struckout three to improve her record to 5-3 on the year. Voelz went 5-2 in PCSC play last season with a 2.79 ERA en route to her earning all-league honors.

Bronco freshman Briana Rios allowed three runs in four innings in the opener before giving way to Turner. Turner would pitch, and pitch well throughout the rest of the afternoon for SCU, but Sac State freshman Caitlin Brooks countered with eight K's in a complete-game four-hitter to allow the Hornets a 2-1 win in Game Two.
