SARATOGA, Calif. – Kelly Scribner hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to power Santa Clara University's softball team to a 3-2 victory over league rival St. Mary's College in the opening game of a PCSC doubleheader.

Santa Clara (9-38; 3-11 PCSC) saw Scribner go 4-for-6 with two homers and three RBI on Saturday. Junior pitcher Carissa Theis threw a complete-game four-hitter and allowed just one earned run in the opener – complementing a Bronco offense that homered four times during the afternoon.

"(The ball) looks really big right now," said Scribner, following her four-hit, two-homerun performance. "I'm glad, especially after having a tough time with it last weekend, I wanted to come out and have a really good weekend. Hopefully it continues tomorrow."

St. Mary's (20-21; 9-4 PCSC) was able to score four quick runs in Game Two to earn a split, 6-3, which was helped along by fielding miscues by the Broncos. The rivalry series will continue with two games on Sunday, beginning at 12 noon.

Scribner's homerun in Game One allowed SCU to erase a 2-1 deficit, after the Gaels pushed in a run in the first inning, sparked by Brittany Sabatini's leadoff double, then scoring again via a sac fly in the fifth. SMC held a tenuous one-run edge prior to Stephanie Fisher coming to the plate to initiate SCU's half of the sixth inning.

"(Stephanie Fisher) put the ball in play and got on base for me and I knew if I could get a base hit, we could tie the game," Scribner said, describing her clutch homerun to left-center. "I hit it hard and was glad to see it go over."

Theis managed to work herself out of a jam in the top of the seventh to allow SCU the opening-game win.

The Broncos out-hit the Gaels 13-6 Saturday, belting four homeruns. Jamie Wallis and Briana Knight joined Scribner by going deep. Scribner went 3 for 3 in Game Two, but five unearned runs were credited to SMC, ultimately undoing the Broncos bid for the sweep.

"If we can play some clean defense tomorrow and let our bats keep talking – almost everyone through the lineup was making good contact today – we can take both games tomorrow," added Scribner.
