Santa Clara (3-12) is coming off a two-win weekend in Moraga at the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) Crossover Tournament. Led by a season-high 13 strikeouts from RH Carissa Theis (2-2; 8.84 ERA) and an extra-inning, game-winning RBI from All-PCSC outfielder Briana Knight (.255 BA), the Broncos knocked off Seattle last Sunday to notch their second-straight win.
"After playing nearly eight innings and working so hard for the win, it was certainly a tense situation," said Knight about the go-ahead hit against Seattle. "Steph (Stephanie Fisher) had just been walked, so I approached the plate calmly. Since I had struggled to get on-base all weekend, I kept thinking that my teammates were doing well against her and all I needed to do was watch the ball. Once the pitcher threw two balls at me, and Seattle called a timeout, I knew that we had the advantage."
Knight (pictured), who hit .413 last season, drove a ball to leftfield, which plated freshman INF Jenna Krummen to give SCU the win. Knight leads the team in RBI (9), coming through with a team-best five hits with RISP. Theis, a product of Leigh High School in San Jose, was tabbed the University's 'Athlete of the Week' by The Santa Clara for her performance inside the circle.
Knight's proven offensive production has been complemented by Fisher's 24 total bases and 10 runs, junior OF Jamie Wallis (.390 BA) and her team-leading 16 hits, along with the recent emergence of freshman INF Ashley Haney (.300 BA), who homered and doubled in three starts last week.
"The new additions to our team have been a blessing," said Knight. "Each one has brought a tremendous amount of talent to the group and a great attitude as well. We all strive for the same goal of success and our chemistry is amazing."
Fourth-year head coach Lisa Mize has brought in 10 new players this year and after a tough initial schedule, which took the team to Texas, New Mexico and Fresno, SCU will settle in to play each of their next 12 games here in the Bay Area.
"We are going to compete with anybody this year," said Mize after Sunday's win over Seattle. "Our early-season schedule has prepared us for this stretch coming up."
