LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Briana Knight hit two homeruns during a stunning seven-run comeback victory, including a go-ahead three-run drive which gave Santa Clara a 9-7 victory over league-favorite LMU Sunday in Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) play in Los Angeles.
Santa Clara (7-27; 2-2 PCSC) trailed 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth, before three consecutive hits, a single by Breezy Bernard, a two-run homer by Knight and a double from Stephanie Fisher initiated a 9-run inning. Knight capped off the comeback with a three-run shot to leftfield.
"Briana Knight was a true leader this weekend," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "She led the charge, she speaks and (her teammates) listen. Right before that inning started, we got together and knew we could hit against Medeiros (the reigning PCSC Pitcher of the Year, who the Broncos beat on Saturday). Everyone was putting the ball in play. We batted through the order and (Knight) hit a homer that put us ahead."
Sophomore right-hander Jessica Turner retired LMU (24-13; 2-2 PCSC) in order in the seventh, assuring SCU the victory and a two-game split on the Lions' home field.
"Going into the first conference weekend we had talked a lot about who we want to be and what we wanted to be about," said Mize. "We proved a lot to everyone, and maybe more importantly to ourselves. Coming out of this series the way we did, against a very, very good LMU team, I could not be more proud of this group. Do not take anything away from LMU, we beat a very good team."
The Broncos won Saturday's series-opener 6-2, but suffered lopsided losses in Games Two and Three before rallying to win the finale.
Knight hit four homeruns in four games, driving in eight runs and totaling 17 bases. Jamie Wallis hit three homers in Los Angeles during the weekend and Stephanie Fisher went 5 for 10 with two doubles. Alyssa Jepsen added five hits and Breezy Bernard had four.
Jessica Turner worked five quality innings of relief in Game Two's comeback win Sunday to earn her second victory. Freshman teammate Briana Rios threw a complete-game in Saturday's opener to get the weekend off on the right track for SCU.
Next up for Santa Clara is a four-game PCSC series at Sacramento State Friday and Saturday, April 6-7.
