SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Don Bordenave, a Santa Clara University volunteer football coach for 33 years who is in the University's Athletic Hall of Fame, died last month at the age of 91.
Bordenave '52 played guard for the legendary Len Casanova and was part of the iconic 1950 Orange Bowl Championship football team that beat Bear Bryant's heavily favored Kentucky Wildcats, 21-13, following a 7-2-1 campaign.
Starting in 1959, Bordenave served as a volunteer assistant football coach alongside his good friend, Pat Malley, until 1984 and later his son, Terry, (1985-92) for a total of 33 years.
In 1977, Bordenave was inducted into the Santa Clara Athletic Hall of Fame. He also served the Santa Clara Unified School District as a teacher and administrator for 56 years.
