Richard "Dick" Garibaldi (1932-2022) Santa Clara Hall of Famer Passes Away

Richard "Dick" Garibaldi (1932-2022) Santa Clara Hall of Famer Passes Away

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Richard "Dick" Garibaldi, former Santa Clara men's basketball head coach and player, has passed away at the age of 89.

A native of Stockton, Garibaldi is among the most decorated and successful men's basketball alumni in the program's history. First joining the program as a student-athlete in 1951, he was a part of three teams that made NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 1952 team that advanced to the Final Four. Both the 1953 and 1954 teams advanced to the Elite Eight.

Garibaldi returned to the Broncos in 1962-63 as the head men's basketball coach, a role he held until 1970. In his seven years at the helm, Garibaldi posted a 137-77 (.640) overall record and led Santa Clara to two NCAA Tournaments (1967 and 1969). The three-year stretch from 1968-70 is among the best in program history with the team going a combined 73-12, and with Garibaldi being honored as the WCC Coach of the Year in each season. In 1968-69, the Broncos posted a 27-2 overall record that included a 21-game winning streak. Both records are still the best in program history.

Garibaldi was a three-time Northern California Coach of the Year recipient and was inducted into the Santa Clara Athletic Hall of Fame in 1969. During his tenure, he saw three Broncos selected in the NBA Draft, including NBA Champion Dennis Awtrey. He was succeeded at Santa Clara as head coach by Carroll Williams in 1970-71.
