SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara Athletics paid tribute to its student-athletes with an awards ceremony Monday evening to cap off the 2021-22 year.
Jim Jennings Award
Christian Garcia (baseball)
Presented annually to one Senior non-student-athlete for his or her service to the athletics department. The award is in honor of Jim Jennings who served as a volunteer in Santa Clara Athletics for more than 20 years.
Jay Farwell Award
Jamie Schroer (women's tennis)
Spencer Fisher (men's cross country/track and field)
Presented annually to one male and one female Senior student-athlete who best combine academic and athletic excellence.
Marygrace Colby Award
Lindsey VanAllen (women's basketball)
Presented annually to one female senior athlete who best demonstrates the qualities or attitude, character, desire, competitive spirit and the will to excel both on and off the field of play. Mary Grace Colby was the first Women's Athletic Director, and was someone who made historic changes here at Santa Clara University.
Henry Schmidt Award
Josip Vrankic (men's basketball)
Presented annually to a male student-athlete who best demonstrates the qualities or attitude, character, desire, competitive spirit and the will to excel both on and off the field of play. Henry Schmidt was the first Santa Clara athletic trainer, a position he held for 50 years.
Jim Shea Award
JT Winston (men's rowing)
Presented annually to one male or female student-athlete who has courageously led his or her team through selfless actions and been a leader in the campus community. Jim Shea was the first Santa Clara student-athlete whose life was cut short while serving in the Vietnam War.
Carroll Williams Award
Zach Litoff (men's cross country/track & field)
Presented annually to one senior student-athlete who best defines what it means to be a "Santa Clara student-athlete": someone who excels in the classroom and athletically while making an outstanding contribution in community service.
Athletics Inclusive Excellence Award
Sammy Needham (softball)
Presented annually to a current or graduating student-athlete who has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the Santa Clara Athletics Department's goal of advancing excellence through diversity, equity and inclusion. Notable contributions might include leadership efforts to celebrate, unite, represent and educate as well as to stand in solidarity with marginalized communities.
DJ Frandsen Award
JJ Escalera (women's cross country/track & field)
Eduardo Lopez Perez (men's soccer)
Presented annually to one male and one female student-athlete who used courage, perseverance and spirit to overcome adversity and now serves as a role model for inspiration. The award is in honor of former men's basketball manager David Frandsen Jr. who inspired many with his battle with cancer which ultimately claimed his life.

Presented annually to an individual or team and represents a pinnacle achievement during the season of play.
