SAN JOSE, Calif. — Santa Clara University athletics Hall of Fame inductee and Broncos football great Doug Cosbie will be inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame Wednesday as part of its 2022 Class ceremony at the SAP Center.
Cosbie transferred to the Mission Campus in 1975 from De Anza College and quickly became then-head coach Pat Malley's starting tight end. He made 26 receptions for five touchdowns in his first season as a Bronco. Cosbie finished his Santa Clara career with 120 total receptions for 1,721 yards and ten touchdowns.
After graduating from Santa Clara University in 1979, Cosbie was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round. He played in more than 140 games during his 10-year NFL career, finishing with 30 career receiving touchdowns and more than 3,700 career receiving yards.
Cosbie was invited to three consecutive Pro-Bowls in 1983, '84, and '85. He appeared in two NFC Championship games in 1981 and '82. It was Cosbie who scored the Cowboys' final touchdown in the fourth quarter of the 1981 NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park, which preceded Dwight Clark's famous "The Catch."
"San Jose's incredibly rich and diverse sports history makes the Hall of Fame selection process very difficult each year," said Charlie Faas, Chairman of the San Jose Sports Authority Board of Directors. "The Class of 2022 is a wonderful representation of the deep and meaningful impact athletes and coaches with South Bay connections have made in their respective sports, locally, nationally and internationally. We are excited to welcome these four remarkable individuals into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame."
Each inductee will be recognized with a bronze plaque permanently installed on the concourse at the SAP Center at San Jose. Including the 2022 inductees, there will be 122 South Bay sports icons enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
Heritage Bank of Commerce is the presenting sponsor for the 2022 Induction Ceremony and Dinner. The annual induction is an event of the San Jose Sports Authority, San Jose Arena Authority, SAP Center Management/San Jose Sharks and the City of San José. The event benefits Special Olympics Northern California and high school sports programs.
