Santa Clara Football Legacy Celebration Set For May 13

The Santa Clara Football Legacy Celebration Registration

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara Athletics and the Bronco Bench Foundation are set to honor the Legacy of Santa Clara Football, along with the 2023 Santa Clara Athletics Hall of Fame Class on May 13, 2023.

Since its inception, the Bronco Bench Foundation has been an extremely integral part of Santa Clara University. Founded in 1962 to raise much needed funds towards a home field for the Santa Clara University baseball and football teams, the Bronco Bench Foundation successfully built Buck Shaw Stadium (now Stevens Stadium-Buck Shaw Field) in 1962. Following this successful project, the Bronco Bench Foundation has focused efforts towards building a scholarship endowment for Bronco Athletics, which has grown to approximately $50 million. This endowment has and will continue to provide scholarships for future generations of Bronco student-athletes.

This event on May 13 will celebrate 60 years of the Bronco Bench Foundation along with the legacy of SCU Football, as these two stories are so intricately intertwined. As part of this event, we will be inducting the following football alumni into the Santa Clara University Athletics Hall of Fame:

Schatzman ('83) played outside linebacker, defensive back and center back for the Broncos from 1979-1983. Also served as Bronco Bench Foundation president for seven years.

Santa Clara football, starting in 1896, has seen many greats.  From coaches such as Buck Shaw, Pat Malley and son Terry Malley to players like Doug Cosbie, Tom Fear, Brent Jones and Dan Pastorini, Santa Clara Football compiled a record of 352–244–28 including three bowl appearances and two conference Championships.  Some of their most notable wins include the 1937 and 1938 Sugar Bowl, the 1950 Orange Bowl, the 1971 win against Florida A&M in the Oakland Coliseum, and the 1980 win against Northern Michigan to a sold out crowd at Buck Shaw Stadium.
