April 17, 2003

By John Maloney

The Mission Harriers will take to the oval this weekend as the men and women teams separate for their competitions. The women will race at the Pomona Pitzer Invitational, while the men will race at the Woody Wilson Classic hosted by UC Davis.

Five women (Robin Bell, Milena Basile, Katie Hansen, Cara Payne and Tara Rooney) will race in the 5000 meters. It is scheduled for a 6:20 p.m. start on Friday evening at Strehle Track at Pomona College in Claremont, Calif.

The men will race at 1500 meters (Bryan Lorentz) and 5000 meters (John Hinman, Ricky Brackett, John Paul Thyken, Chris Doerhoff, Pat Green, Kevin Edwards, Dominic Guidera). The 1500m is at 4:50 p.m. and the 5000m is at 8:35 p.m. The Woody Wilson Classic will be held at the Woody Wilson Track on the campus of UC Davis.

The women will be racing their best competition of the season as schools from across the nation will be competing. Over 20 athletes are seeded faster than the Bronco entries in the 5000 meters which will ensure the best chance for breakthroughs for all the team.

The men similarly will face their stiffest competition as the meet is designated a Grand Prix meet for the Pacific Association USA Track and Field. The trio of Green, Doerhoff, and Thyken will be in line for best chance at a PR this season.
