Cross Country Teams Travel to Aggie Open

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's cross country teams return to action Saturday morning at the 32nd annual Aggie Open, hosted by UC Davis.

The women's race begins at 9 a.m. and will feature the Bronco women against teams from Southern Oregon, Chico State, Saint Mary's, Pacific, Sacramento State, UC Davis, UC Berkeley, Cal St. Stanislaus, Sonoma State, Cal St. Hayward, Holy Names and UC Santa Cruz.

The men's race is scheduled for a 9:45 a.m. start. Joining the Broncos in the 11-team field are teams from Cal St. Hayward, Chico State, Saint Mary's, Southern Oregon, UC Davis, Sacramento State, Cal St. Stanislaus, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz and Holy Names.

The Bronco women, who are expected to sit out their top runners in the event, are coming off a fifth-place showing at the Fresno State Invitational last weekend at Woodard Park. Kim Bates, Robin Bell and Milena Basile continue to pace the squad, while the fourth and fifth slots remain up for grabs. Bates traversed the 5,000-meter course in 18:47 for seventh-place overall, while Bell finished 17th at 19:13 and Basile covered the course in 19:23 for the 21st slot.

John Maloney's men's squad finished in a third-place tie at the USF Invitational last weekend, despite sitting out its top three runners. Bronco junior Ricky Brackett paced Santa Clara with a seventh-place finish, covering the four-mile course at Golden Gate Park in a time of 21:29. Four Bronco freshmen finished among the next five Santa Clara runners, who each finished among the top-17 in the race . All nine Broncos finished among the top 36 finishers in the 62-participant field. Thomas Chapman, Michael Helms and Benjamin Gauen are each expected to return for the Broncos at the Aggie Open.

Driving Directions to Aggie Open
From Interstate 80, take Hwy. 113 North. Exit at Hutchison Rd. (the first exit), curve right on to Hutchison Rd. At the first stoplight at the corner of Hutchison Rd. and LaRue Ave., you will see the large field that is the start/finish area. Turn left onto LaRue: the first building on the right is Recreation Hall, where parking, restrooms, and showers are available.
