Meet the Future of Bronco Baseball: Matt Smithwick

Today, Bronco baseball announces the 10th member of its incoming class of freshman for 2014-15, Matt Smithwick. The outfielder currently attends San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, Calif.

"Growing up in the East Bay, I have always been aware of Santa Clara's excellence," Smithwick said. "In addition to the location, the beauty and comfort of the campus captured me on my initial visit."

In 2013, Smithwick hit .339 for head coach Chris deClercq and the Wolves. He hit .400 in East Bay Athletic League play and went 4-for-4 with six RBIs in one game last season. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect earned All-EBAL honors and was named the SRVHS Offensive MVP.

In 2012, Smithwick was named to the Perfect Game WWBA 15u National Championship All Tournament Team with a .300 batting average, two doubles, one home run, five RBIs and four stolen bases.

He is also a high school teammate of fellow 2014-15 incoming freshman Alex Barden.

"Matt is a guy that we are very lucky to have coming into the program. He has the size and strength to make him a threat to score a run every time he steps to the plate," pitching coach/recruiting coordinator Gabe Ribas said. "Matt is a hard-nosed player who really understands the idea of 'Relentless Development.' This guy is going to be a terror on WCC pitchers down the road."

The future Bronco's older brother, Dan, played outside linebacker at Brown University, and Matt has also played football in high school.

Smithwick is a mamber of the SRVHS Leadership Program, which is heavily involved in the community, and was named the 2012-13 Student of the Year. Outside of baseball, his hobbies include working out, going to the gym, fishing, listening to music, football, golf and pickup basketball. He plans to study Business at Santa Clara.

"I view the Silicon Valley as a perfect place to begin a career after my time at Santa Clara," Smithwick said. "Santa Clara is an amazing place to play baseball and I look forward to furthering my baseball career at SCU."
