RENO, Nev. — In their third and final head-to-head meeting of the season Tuesday night, the Santa Clara Broncos and Nevada Wolf Pack played their highest scoring game of three contests in 2014. The Wolf Pack put up multiple runs in the first two frames and scored in five of the first six innings to win 9-4 at Peccole Park and take the season series two games to one.

The Broncos (13-19, 4-5 WCC) started freshman pitcher Kevin George (L, 1-2), who threw 2.0 innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Santa Clara used six relief pitchers after George, and got scoreless innings from senior Max Deering and freshman Jason Seever.

Junior Tyler Wells started for Nevada and allowed three runs (one earned) in 2.2 innings. Freshman reliever Evan McMahan (W, 3-0) allowed one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts in 3.0 innings to earn the win.

Santa Clara opened the scoring in the first with an RBI double from senior left fielder Casey Munoz to drive in senior center fielder Greg Harisis.

Nevada junior first baseman Austin Byler recorded two-RBI hits in each of his first two trips to the plate, a single in the first and a double in the second to put the Wolf Pack (16-14, 8-7 MWC) ahead 4-1. The reigning Mountain West Conference Baseball Player of the Week went 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two runs scored on the evening.

Senior first baseman Mac Hess hit an RBI single and senior second baseman Zach Looney walked in a run in the third to pull the Broncos within one run at 4-3. Four different Broncos recorded an RBI on the night, and sophomore shortstop Jose Vizcaino, Jr. led the team with three of its nine hits.

Nevada scored four runs between the third and sixth — including the fifth home run of the season from Byler — to go ahead 8-4 through the end of the sixth. The lone Santa Clara run in that span came from an RBI double by freshman third baseman Kyle Czaplak in the fifth. Nether team scored a run in the last three frames.

Santa Clara will look for its third straight West Coast Conference series win when it hits the road for a weekend series at Gonzaga (10-21, 6-6 WCC) April 11-13. First pitch times are as follows: 6 p.m. April 11, 6 p.m. April 12, 12 p.m. April 13.
