Former Broncos Nava, Medica Begin Season in Big Leagues

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — As the 2014 Major League Baseball season gets under way this week, former Santa Clara Bronco baseball players Daniel Nava and Tommy Medica were named to their teams' opening day rosters. It marks the second season that Nava has been on the Boston Red Sox opening day roster and the first season that Medica has been on the San Diego Padres opening day roster.

Nava appeared in 17 Grapefruit League games during 2014 Spring Training for the Boston Red Sox, and hit .205 with two doubles, two home runs and a team-high 10 walks. Last season, he hit .303 with 29 doubles, 12 home runs and 66 RBIs in 134 appearances with the World Series champion Red Sox. He played in five World Series games and hit for a pair of RBIs in game two.

Medica made the most appearances for the Padres in 2014 Spring Training and hit 22-for-68 (.324) with four doubles, one triple and three home runs. He led the team with 12 runs scored and three home runs (T-Yonder Alonso) in Cactus League play. Last season, he hit .290 with 10 RBIs and nine runs scored in 19 games with the Padres. In his Major League debut on September 11, 2013, the former Bronco homered off Cliff Lee in his second at bat in the big leagues.
