SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball finished its opening weekend with a doubleheader split. They fell to Boston College 8-6 in the opener and topped Nevada 4-3 on a walkoff single in the 10^th of game two. The Broncos are now 1-3 on the season, and return to the diamond Tuesday against Cal Poly at 6:00 p.m. 

"Right now, we are really focused on staying positive," said Bronco head coach Dan O'Brien. "We had a tough three games to start the weekend, and I think we were rewarded with a win at the end because of our positive attitude and effort."

Game 1

Steven Wilson (0-0) started for Santa Clara and got a no-decision in 6.2 innings. Wilson allowed four runs on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Max Deering (L, 0-1) picked up the loss by giving up two runs in 0.1 innings. Greg Harisis was 4-5 with a double, a run scored, and a RBI to lead the offense. Zach Looney was 2-4 with two RBI while Jose Vizcaino, Jr. was 3-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Jeff Burke (0-0) made the start for Boston College and got a no-decision while allowing five runs in 3.0 innings. Burke allowed seven hits and walked one with one strikeout. Bobby Skogsbergh (W, 1-0) got the win in 2.0 scoreless innings of relief. John Nicklas (SV, 1) a scoreless bottom of the ninth to get the save. Chris Shaw was 2-4 with a double, a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Tom Bourdon was 2-5 with two RBI and a run scored while Blake Butera was 1-3 with a double and a run scored.

Casey Munoz got the offense going in the bottom of the second with a sharp single to left. Stevie Berman followed with another solid single to left to put two on with none out and Vizcaino loaded the bases with a bunt single to third. Seaver Whalen was hit by a pitch to bring in the second run of the game and a wild pitch advanced all three runners to make the score 3-0. Harisis hit an infield single to load the bases again. Graf-Brennen knocked in a run with a fielder's choice for the first out but runners remained on the corners. Looney bunted for a single that scored the fourth run of the inning. Quinton Perry grounded into a double play to end the inning.

John Hennessy drew a lead off walk and Shaw blasted a one-out home run to right to get the Eagles on the board. Johnny Adams followed with a sharp single to left field but Wilson got a double play to end the inning.

Vizcaino roped a double to left to start things in the home half of the sixth. Whalen laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Vizcaino to third with one down for the top of the order. Harisis singled through the left side to make it a 6-2 game but was erased on a caught stealing. Graf-Brennen doubled down the right field line with two down and Looney reached on a fielder's choice. Graf-Brennen was lifted for pinch runner Tyler Meditz and Perry grounded out to end the inning.

Stephen Sauter walked with one down in the top of the seventh and Nick Colucci followed with a single to right. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Cronin hit a RBI ground out. After Butera was hit by a pitch, Kuhns came in to pitch and surrendered a RBI single. The inning ended when Vizcaino made an acrobatic play in foul territory on a fly ball.

The Eagles made it a one-run game in the top of the eighth. Shaw doubled to left center with one out and advanced to third on a groundout. Sauter singled to left field to make the score 6-5. Kuhns was lifted for Max Deering who got the final out with a strikeout.

Cronin started the top of the ninth with an infield single to put the tying run on base with the top of the order coming up. Butera doubled and Reece Karalus came in to pitch. Bourdon tied the game with a single to left and a sac fly by Hennessey put Boston College on top 7-6. Bourdon swiped second and an infield single by Geoffrey Murphy put runners on the corners. Shaw hit a sacrifice fly to make the Eagle lead two runs at 8-6. The inning finally came to an end when Shaw was caught stealing.

Pinch hitter Kert Woods led off the bottom of the ninth against new Boston College pitcher John Nicklas. Woods grounded out weakly and Looney grounded back to the pitcher. Mac Hess struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch to keep the game alive. C.J. Jacobe pinch-hit but struck out swinging to end the game.

Game 2

Bronco starting pitcher Jake Steffens threw seven innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on eight hits, walked one and struck out one. He issued 11 outs by way of the ground ball and finished the game with a no-decision.

The Phoenix, Ariz. native recorded a 1-2-3 inning to start the game and gave up a leadoff double to right fielder Brad Gerig to start the second. With one out and Gerig at second base, third baseman Scott Kaplan flew out to center and Gerig took third before being thrown out at home by Santa Clara center fielder Rory Graf-Brennen, who slipped after making the catch.

Nevada threatened once more in the fifth with runners on first and second and one out before second baseman Zach Looney took a ground ball, tagged second and threw to first to complete Santa Clara's fourth double play through five innings.

Catcher Peter Summerville gave Santa Clara its first runner in scoring position in the fifth on a two-out double to left-center. One batter later, third baseman Max Kuhns hit a ground ball through the legs of second baseman Justin Bridgman, and the error allowed Summerville to score from second and put the Broncos up 1-0. With two outs one inning later, Nevada first baseman Austin Byler hit a double down the right field line to tie the score at one.

The scoring continued for the third consecutive half-inning when Greg Harisis was awarded second base on a throwing error by Bridgman, and was eventually brought home on a throwing error by Kaplan, who threw across the infield short of his first baseman Byler. Two Bronco errors led to a two-run seventh for the Wolfpack which put the visitors in front 3-2 at the seventh inning stretch.

Kyle Cortopassi made his season debut as a pinch hitter for Summerville in the seventh, and hit a double down the left field line to give the Broncos runners on second and third with no outs. After an intentional walk of Max Kuhns, Kyle Czaplak pinch hit for Whalen and grounded into a double play which brought in Jose Vizcaino, Jr. to tie the game for the third time in as many innings.

With the score knotted at three entering the 10th, Max Kuhns started the inning with a hit by pitch on a 1-2 count and Kyle Czaplak hit a line drive single to put Broncos on first and second with no outs. C.J. Jacobe pinch hit with one out and hit an RBI single to left to score pinch runner Kert Woods and give the Broncos their first win of 2014.

Nick Medeiros (W, 1-0) earned the win in relief with a scoreless 10th, as he entered the game with a runner on first and recorded three consecutive outs. Jacobe's walkoff was the third overall hit and first run scored against Nevada's Adam Whitt (L, 0-1) in the right-hander's 5.1 innings pitched on the weekend.
