Santa Clara fell 55-50 on Sunday afternoon to San Diego in men's basketball action at the Leavey Center to fall to 7-11 and 0-2 in the WCC. San Diego moved to 10-7 and 2-0 in the WCC and has won four straight.
With both finishing with double-doubles, San Diego's Gyno Pomare finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds and the Broncos' John Bryant totaled 19 points and 12 boards. It was Bryant's 11th double-double of the year and the 35th of his career.
Santa Clara's five starters were the only players to score as no one from the bench added to the final tally. Marc Trasolini and Perry Petty both scored 10 points, but Petty turned the all over seven times.
Santa Clara went the lockeroom with a 23-17 advantage, led by Bryant's 10 first-half rebounds.
Santa Clara led 48-45 with 1:41 to go before USD's Rob Jones cut it to one at 48-47 on a lay-up with 1:18 left. With :38 ticks left, Trumaine Johnson was called for a foul against Petty, but on the same play Petty was called for a technical foul in response to Johnson's hard foul. USD's Pomare canned both technical shots, and Petty converted both of his charities at his end of the floor.
With SCU holding onto a 51-50 advantage, Johnson connected on a driving shot inside the key with :30 seconds to go. Kevin Foster turned the ball over and after Matt Dorr retrieved the loose ball, was fouled by Ben Dowdell. Dorr made both of his free throws for a 53-50 lead with :14 seconds to go. The game ended with Rob Jones canning two charities with :01 left for the five-point victory.
