Santa Clara freshmen point guard Kevin Foster (Katy, Texas/Morton Ranch) broke Kurt Rambis' freshman points scored school record on Sat., Feb. 21 at USF when he scored 20 points.
The record has stood for 32 years and Rambis' jersey was retired in Dec., 2008 officially with a ceremony at Santa Clara. Rambis, the 1980 WCC Player of the Year who went on to star with the Los Angles Lakers, is the career points leader with 1,736 points and was No. 2 in career rebounds (1,037) until John Bryant passed him earlier this month.
SCU freshman Marc Trasolini tied John Bryant's SCU freshman record for blocks with 37 at USF. Another freshman, James Rahon, broke the old three pointers made record earlier this month (he has 52, the record was 51) and is No. 1 currently at 41.6% in three point percentage, topping Steve Nash's 40.8% his freshman season (1992-93).
Foster now has 418 points in his rookie campaign and topped Rambis' 414 points scored in 1976-77. In addition at the USF game, Foster also broke the freshman field goals attempted record also set by Rambis the same season. Foster has 329 to Rambis' 317.
Earlier in the season Foster broke the freshman school record for three pointers attempted and three pointers made. He has made 74 and the old record was 51 by Brandon Rhoe (2002-03). He has attempted 195 three pointers and the old record was 145, also by Brandon Rhoe (2002-03).
Foster leads all West Coast Conference freshmen with 14.4 ppg in all games and with 16.8 ppg in WCC games. Overall in the WCC, he is fourth in scoring in WCC games and sixth in all games. He has scored 20+ points in six WCC games, including a career-best 31 points at Saint Mary's on Jan. 9.
Additionally, Foster is 42 minutes away from breaking Ben Dowdell's minutes played record set last season. Dowdell had 890 last season and Foster has 848. Foster is No. 3 on the SCU freshman list in steals (36 this season, record is 49) and No. 6 in assists (has 71, record is 119).
