SANTA CLARA, Calif - Santa Clara freshman Robert Smith has been named to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshmen All-America Team. Smith was second on the team with 12.1 ppg and led the team with 3.1 apg. It is the second straight year a Bronco has been named to the team with 2009 WCC Newcomer of the Year Kevin Foster also receiving the honor from CollegeInsider.com.
"For the second straight year we are proud to be represented on the CI FAA team, this year by Robert Smith. He played a lot this season and improved as it progressed. This is an honor well deserved. Congratulation to all 20 honorees!," said Bronco head coach Kerry Keating.
Smith averaged 12.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 1.0 spg, and 32.8 mpg. He led the Broncos in minutes played, seeing action in every game. He had a career-high 23 points vs. Saint Mary's on Jan. 10, 2010 and collected five three pointers vs. LMU on Feb. 11, 2010. He collected a career-high eight rebounds and seven assists vs. USF on Feb. 20, 2010.
Smith finished the season at No. 4 on the single season all-time list with 1,049 minutes played and set the Santa Clara freshman school record with that tally. He was in 11 top 10 categories of the SCU freshman records, including No. 1 in minutes played (1049); No. 3 in points scored (387); No. 6 in scoring average (12.1); No. 6 in field goals made (129); No. 2 in field goals attempted (375); No. 8 in three-pointers made (40); No. 5 in three pointers attempted (140); No. 2 in free throws made (89); No. 2 in free throws attempted (127); No. 2 in assists (97); and No. 5 in steals (33).
A 2009 graduate of Perris High School, Smith was coached by Elzie Landers. He led his team with 22 ppg, 10 rpg, 6 apg and 3 spg his senior year when he was named all-state.
