SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Jay Farwell has been promoted to director of rowing and will oversee both the men's and women's rowing programs at Santa Clara.
"I want to thank the University, Renee Baumgartner, Carl Reed and the rest of the Department of Athletics administration for their continued support of the rowing programs at Santa Clara," Farwell said. "I am grateful for this opportunity to lead both the men's and women's teams into the upcoming 2021-22 season and beyond. These teams are filled with incredibly dedicated student-athletes who are passionate about the sport of rowing and the opportunity to represent Santa Clara University. As an alum of the rowing program, I have a great appreciation for the student-athlete experience that Santa Clara provides and recognize the tremendous on-going support we receive from our faithful alumni to facilitate that experience. I look forward to the continuing opportunity to work with and challenge these student-athletes to pursue their best efforts both on and off the water. I also want to thank my wife (Kelly) and my three children (Stella, Giacomo, and Dominic) for their endless support in my efforts to serve the Santa Clara rowing programs."
Farwell has been the head coach for the men the last 10 seasons and has led the Broncos to the IRA National Championship Regatta six times. The V8 crew won its first WIRA Championship in 2016 in wire-to-wire fashion under Farwell's leadership. He was named WIRA Coach of the Year.
This is Farwell's second stint leading the program, having also served from 1997-2003. He stepped down from coaching and was the Director of Compliance at SCU from 2004-06.
His father, Jim, is one of the founding members of Santa Clara rowing and was a head coach of both men's and women's rowing teams for more than 20 years from 1965-85. He is the namesake for the James D. Farwell Award that is awarded annually to one male and one female senior student-athlete from the sports of cross country, golf, rowing, softball, tennis, track and water polo who best combine academic and athletic excellence.
"We couldn't be more pleased that Jay will become our director of rowing," Santa Clara director of athletics Renee Baumgartner said. "The Farwell family's legacy has been instrumental in the success of our rowing program at Santa Clara University. Jay's knowledge, dedication, and vision will elevate not only the competitiveness on the water but also the student-athlete experience."
A 1994 and 2001 graduate of Santa Clara, Farwell was a member of the men's rowing team as an undergrad.
