STANFORD, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's golf team scored a final round 306, falling seven spots on the leaderboard to finish play at The Goodwin.
"The wheels came off all at once," head coach Rob Miller said. "We weren't very good today. Everybody struggled. "
The Broncos were led by sophomore Hayden Shieh, who carded a 3-over 73, and freshman Michiel Eyre III, who scored a 5-over 75 on Saturday.
Santa Clara fell to 22nd place with a three-round total of 886 (+26). UC Davis led from start to finish capturing the team title by 10 shots over UNLV.
Making a move in Friday's second round with a 284, the Broncos were poised for a top-10 finish, but couldn't pull it off on Saturday.
"We needed to play well today and we didn't," Miller said. "Next time we're in that situation we'll do better."
Shieh was the team's top finisher with a 6-over 216, good for a 41st place tie.
Eyre III scored his best round of the tournament on Saturday to make a slight move up the individual leaderboard with his tournament total of 231.
Tyler Kertson failed to build on his first round 69, scoring a 78 on Saturday to fall into a tie for 70th with a three-round total of 10-over 220.
Derek Ackerman and Evan McLeod each scored a final round 80. The Broncos failed to score below 300 as a team for the first time in the past 11 rounds.
"We have three tournaments to go. We'll use the next two to prepare for the conference championships," Miller added.
The Broncos are back in action on April 2 at the two-day Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
"Regroup and move on. Fortunately golfers have short memories," Miller concluded.
