Delgadillo Scores Twice as Santa Clara Holds Off UCR 2-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Carlos Delgadillo scored two first half goals and Santa Clara fended off UC Riverside during some frantic final minutes to defeat the Highlanders 2-1 Friday night at Stevens Stadium.

Santa Clara (3-4-0) benefited from an immediate penalty kick goal just three minutes in and would continue to attack throughout - firing off a season-high 17 shots.

Delgadillo knocked in the early PK and followed that up by stealing an errand pass and scoring a breakaway goal which put SCU up for good midway through the first half.

Star forward Norberto Ochoa was all over the field for UC Riverside (3-4-0), who was coming off a 2-1 overtime win over No. 8 UCLA. Ochoa totaled seven shots and briefly tied the game in the 20th minute.

"I don't think we gave up a lot until right at the end," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast, commenting on the flurry of action in the closing moments. "They pinged one off the bar, fouled Kendall (McIntosh) ... I thought on both of those moments they opened us up and caused a little bit of a challenge."

"Beyond that, I thought we did a good job. We went to the corners when we needed to, we possessed and had very good chances to put it away at 3-1. I like the fact we can play with the lead and still attack, we need to be able to do that and we did that tonight."

SCU will try for its third straight win when they host Cal State Northridge Sunday at 1 p.m.
