Cal State Northridge Uses Two Penalty Kicks to Beat Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Cal State Northridge was awarded two penalty kicks and converted on both, beating Santa Clara 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Stevens Stadium.

Both penalty kicks came in the second half for the Matadors. The first was executed by Trevor Morley in the 66th minute, which forced the Broncos to respond. SCU did, nearly immediately tying the game, before CSUN was awarded another PK just four minutes later.

"It was a game where both teams were posturing until one team made a mistake, and unfortunately we made the mistake," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "A tough game in terms of execution and trying to do what we wanted to do."

The Broncos out-shot the Matadors 8-7, and had a PK chance of their own late in the second half, which was blocked by CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs.

Cal State Northridge (3-3-1) scored four goals Friday during a 4-1 victory over St. Mary's in Moraga.

"I am proud of the guys for fighting, but we have to be better in the right moments," says Rast. "It came down to execution. If we can make some passes, break their pressure, not let the ball bounce in our back area, we are going to be fine. Unfortunately those are things that have plagued us this season and we have to be better at it."

Santa Clara (3-5-0) was coming off a 2-1 victory over UC Riverside. The Broncos will wrap up its current seven-game September homestand next Friday, Sept. 25 against Cal.
