SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After clinching the West Coast Conference title Saturday night, Santa Clara men's soccer heads to Cal State Fullerton Thursday to play in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Broncos and Titans will play at 7 p.m. in Titan Stadium.
Santa Clara (10-7-1, 5-1-1 WCC), making its 20th trip to the tournament, finished the season on a six-match unbeaten streak (5-0-1). The Broncos have played four teams (Wake Forest, North Carolina, Seattle, Cal Poly) that made the tournament during the regular season and a fifth, Stanford, in an exhibition game.
"We're excited to be back in the NCAA tournament. It's why we play," said Santa Clara head coach Cameron Rast. "We want to be playing our best at the end of the year and we want that to turn into something meaningful for our players, which is to be on that national stage. Our guys worked very hard for that. Fullerton is a very good team and we're looking forward the matchup. We have everything to play for and that makes us a very dangerous team."
Carlos Delgadillo led the Broncos during the regular season with nine goals and 21 points. Edson Cardona added three goals and Dylan Autran and Max Ornstil each scored two goals apiece. Alfred Edmonds led the team with four assists and Delgadillo was second with three. Eight other Broncos picked up at least one assist.
Kendall McIntosh played every minute in net and allowed 20 goals for a 1.09 GAA. He made 59 saves for a .747 save percentage and collected five shutouts.
CSU Fullerton (13-7-1, 6-3-1 Big West) won the Big West tournament with a 1-0 win at Santa Barbara. The Titans have won four consecutive games and finished 8-3-0 at home.
Earlier this year Santa Clara and Cal State Fullerton played at Stevens Stadium with the Titans coming back to win 2-1. The Broncos are 11-8-2 in the all-time series.
