CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Two members of the Santa Clara University men's tennis team earned two wins each in opening-day action at the 2004 Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships, hosted by the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Senior Taylor Bedilion bested Tennessee Tech's Michele Pazeri 6-2, 7-5, and followed with a 6-4, 6-1 decision over Furman's Brennan Phippen. Bronco sophomore Jan Macek followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over UT-Chattanooga's Tim Kuschera, and added a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Kamil Pajkowski of New Mexico.
Both Broncos will continue action Saturday morning in the Round of 64. Macek will play Arizona's Paul Warkentin at 9 a.m. Bedilion will follow against Texas-Arlington's Alexander Farquharson at 10 a.m. Both Santa Clara opponents earned No. 17 seeds in the draw.
The prequalifying tournament includes a 192-player singles draw and a 96-doubles team bracket. Top finishers will feed into a 128-player singles and 64-doubles team qualifying tournament Oct. 4-6. The main draw (64 singles, 32 doubles) takes place Oct. 7-10. With more than 350 competitors, a prequalifier would have to win up to seven matches just to reach the main draw.
Bedilion and Macek will also pair together in doubles. The duo received a bye in today's action and will face Parker Ross and Scott Newmark of Butler on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in the Round of 64.
The Icy Hot tournament is the first of three national championship events to take place during the 2004-05 season at the Division I level.
The entire Bronco squad will reunite at the SCU Bronco Classic, October 8-10 at the Degheri Tennis Center.
