SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's tennis program will host the SCU Bronco Classic Friday through Sunday. It will mark the debut of this tournament at the Degheri Center, and matches will also be played at the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club. More than 80 participants from 13 West Region teams will participate, including three squads that finished last season ranked nationally by the ITA: Stanford, California, Washington, Oregon and Boise State.
Players will compete in three (32-player draw) singles and two (16-team draw) doubles flights. Friday's matches will begin at 8 a.m. and most likely continue at both venues to 6 p.m. Saturday's action starts with doubles at 8 a.m. and singles following at 10 a.m. The event will conclude on Sunday with singles at 10 a.m. and doubles at noon. Tournament officials will update the draws throughout the day at www.tennisinformation.com. Fans can also view the results at the end of each day's play at SantaClaraBroncos.com.
"We are fortunate to host this tournament," head coach George Husack said. "Our team is excited to compete and home and we're bringing in many nationally-ranked teams, which adds to the strength of the event. It promises to be an exciting weekend."
The Broncos have eight student-athletes participating this weekend. Taylor Bedilion and Jan Macek, who both participated in the ITA All-American Championship last weekend, will compete in Flight A, along with teammate Francisco Zepponi. Flight B will include Broncos Bobby Rasmussen, Ben Hidalgo and Eric Kochanski, while Flight C features a trio of freshmen: Chris Iwamura, Tyler Wilson and A.J. Kerin.
UNLV's Henner Nehles earned the top seed in Flight A, while Anders Dalskov of UC Santa Barbara is the No. 1 seed in Flight B. Kerin earned Flight C's top slot.
