SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Cody Ferguson scored four times, Blake D'Souza had the late tying goal and Matt Peterson tallied three goals, including the game-winner, in Santa Clara men's water polo's season-opening 11-10 victory over San Jose State on Sunday.
Ary Kamen's goal with 4:53 left gave the Spartans (0-4) a 10-8 lead, but the Broncos took over from there.
On the ensuing possession, Peterson hit the back of the net on a penalty shot before D'Souza scored the tying goal less than one minute later.
A defensive stop set up the game-winner as Peterson got free on a counterattack and despite being hounded by two defenders fired shot from about six meters out with 1:07 remaining that got past goalie Noah Pendleton.
In a game where neither team led by more than two goals, Santa Clara did not allow a shot on goal in San Jose State's final two possessions.
Gal Haimovich had three goals and Kamen a pair for the Spartans.
Jake Taylor had one goal and four assists for the Broncos.
Chase Zamborelli, played the second half in goal for the Broncos, and picked up the win. He had three saves and Sean Tehaney had nine in the opening 16 minutes.
Pendleton suffered the loss for San Jose State, which was 4-for-9 on the power play.
