KUNA, Idaho – Paced by tournament leader Kaci McCartan, the Santa Clara women's golf team carded the top two scoring rounds in program history and holds a 9-stroke lead after the opening two rounds of the Boise State Bronco Fall Invitational, played today at the Falcon Crest Golf Club.

McCartan shot a career-best round of 1-under-par 71 over the opening 18 holes, Annie Freman was at even-par 72 and Meghan Shain scored a 1-over 73 leading the Broncos to the best team score in school history with a 2-over-par 291.

But that was just the beginning. The second round was even better than the first for the Broncos.

Establishing a new career-best score with a 3-under-par 69 over the second 18 holes, McCartan became just the third Bronco women's golfer to score in the 60s over the last five seasons. Her 4-under 140 after the first 36 holes is one shot better than Boise State's Sammie Pless and three strokes better than teammate Annie Freman, who shot a 1-under 71 in the second round.

Ending the first round tied with host Boise State, the Broncos improved their team score and set a new program record shooting a blistering 1-under-par 287 over the second 18 holes. The previous best round was a 292 during the 2009-10 season.

Shain duplicated her first round score in the second round and sits in a fifth place tie with a 2-over 146. Playing in her first tournament of the season, sophomore Ashley Noda fired rounds of 75 and 74 is tied for 13th with a 5-over 149.

"I'm so proud of the team," said head coach Krystal Kelly. "They have been working really hard in preparation for the season. Overall their course management was spot on and they were able to convert a lot of the putts, for both pars and birdies."

Playing as an individual in her first tournament of the season, sophomore Monique Riley shot rounds of 78 and 76 and is tied for 23rd place at 10-over 154. Taylor Camany failed to sign her scorecard after a first round 4-over 76 and was disqualified from individual competition, although her final round score will count towards the team total, according to Kelly.

The Broncos are in position to post their first tournament title since capturing the Lamkin Grip Invitational on November 8, 2011. "We are looking forward to teeing it up in the morning," Kelly added.

Final round action is scheduled to tee off 7:00 a.m. and live stats will be available at golfstat.com.
