Women’s Golf In Fourth After Two Rounds Of Anuenue Spring Break Classic

KAPALUA, Maui – With back-to-back scores of 301 the Santa Clara women's golf team sits alone in fourth place after two rounds of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic. The third and final round of the event will be played Wednesday on the Bay Course in Kapalua, Maui.

"This golf course is tough and the wind has been a factor on both days," noted head coach Krystal Kelly. "The girls played really well."

The three highest-ranked teams in the tournament, according to the most recent Golfstat poll, are the three squads ahead of the Broncos in the team standings. Pepperdine, ranked 15th, leads the field with a two-day total of 1-over 577 with No. 10 Washington three shots back at 580. No. 37 ranked UC Davis rests in third with a 594 total, eight shots ahead of Santa Clara.

Sophomore Meghan Shain has carded a tournament-high 27 pars and rests in a tie for 11th place with her 4-over 148 scoring consecutive rounds of 74.

After her first round even-par 72, junior Kaci McCartan fired a 78 today and is in a tie for 14th place with her 6-over 150.

Sophomore Monique Riley and freshman Annie Freman are tied with a trio of golfers for 27th place at 8-over 152. Freman carded the best round of the day for the Broncos with an even-par 72. She entered today's second round in a 58th place tie but clawed her way up the leaderboard with her seventh at or below par score in 24 rounds this year. Riley scored a 77 today after yesterday's 75.

"The girls are playing smart golf," Kelly noted. "They are where they want to be on hole locations and they have confidence in their game right now."

Pepperdine's Grace Na came within one shot of the course record today shooting a 6-under 66 for a two-day total of 8-under 136. She holds a six shot lead over Washington's Ying Luo and Betty Chen of UC Davis.

"I'm real happy with the way we are playing," stated Kelly. "Ideally a top three finish would be nice, but we're just going to go out there and play golf, be relaxed, and see what happens."

Final round play gets underway on Wednesday with a shotgun start at 10:45 a.m. (PDT). Live scoring for the tournament is available at www.golfstat.com or click the link provided on the Bronco's website.
