KAPALUA, Maui – A hole-in-one by sophomore Meghan Shain was the highlight of the day and the Santa Clara women's golf team claimed sixth place with their final round 306 at the 3rd annual Anuenue Spring Break Classic played on the Bay Course in Kapalua, Maui.
Shain one-hopped the ball into the cup on the par-3, 176-yard third hole for her first hole-in-one and ended the tournament as the Broncos' top finisher for the first time in her career. It was the first by a Bronco since Taylor Camany aced the 13th hole in the final round of the Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational on Sep. 14, 2010.
"Incredible," said head coach Krystal Kelly of Shain's ace. "It's really exciting to see Meghan step up."
With two rounds of 301 and a final round 306, the Broncos placed sixth with their total of 908, finishing in sixth place or better for the seventh time in their nine events. "Overall I'm happy," said Kelly of her team's showing. "It was pretty windy all three rounds which made a tough course even more difficult and it was a very tough field."
Pepperdine, ranked 15th in last week's Golfstat poll, took the team title by nine shots over No. 10 Washington with a three-day total of 870 (+6) and the five teams in front of Santa Clara on the leaderboard were all ranked higher. The Broncos were grouped with the tournament's top two teams for the final round and Kelly said it was a learning experience for her team.
"It was great playing with Pepperdine and Washington," the coach stated. "Those teams are just consistent in their play and we know the things we need to work on going into our next event."
Shain fired a 5-over 77 in today's final round and placed in a tie for 16th with a trio of golfers with her 225 (+9) total. Junior Kaci McCartan was a shot back of her teammate with a 20th place finish at 10-over 226.
For just the second time this season freshman Annie Freman was not the team's top individual finisher. Freman was solid the last two days with an even-par 72 yesterday and a final round 76 today, but her first round 80 left her tied for 26th at 12-over 228.
Monique Riley ended the tournament with consecutive rounds of 77 to finish with a 13-over 229, tied for 29th place. Taylor Camany had her best round of the tournament today with a 78 and ended with a 243.
Pepperdine's Grace Na claimed individual medalist honors winning by eight shots over Betty Chen of UC Davis with an 11-under 205.
"We had some bad bounces, but they played smart," Kelly said about her team. "It wasn't our best, but it wasn't terrible."
The Broncos return to action on Monday, April 7 competing in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
