Freman Co-Leader; Women’s Golf Tied For Fifth After Round One Of Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. – Freshman Annie Freman is tied for the tournament lead after an even-par 73 and the Santa Clara women's golf team sits in a fifth place tie after the first round of the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational played today at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course.

Freman, who won her first career tournament title at last week's Colby Invitational, is tied with Cal Poly's Alex Phillips and Jamie Corr atop the leaderboard, one shot ahead of Seattle's Juhee Lee heading into Tuesday's final round.

As a team the Broncos shot a first round 318 (+26) and are tied with Weber State and Cal Poly's B team, 10 shots behind Cal Poly's A team, who set the pace with a 310. Sonoma State, UC Riverside and Seattle are tied for second place after compiling a round of 316 (+24).

Sophomore Meghan Shain, competing as an individual, carded the second-lowest score by a Bronco with a 2-over-par 75 and sits in a tie for fifth place, just two shots off the pace.

The four remaining team members are within three strokes of each other after the first 18 holes. Sadie Strain is tied for 26th after an 81 (+8) with Kaci McCartan and Ashley Noda tied for 36th after a first round 82. Taylor Camany fired an 84 and is tied for 46th.

All nine players on the roster are competing for the Broncos in their last tournament of the fall season with Casey Briggs (81), Monique Riley (82) and Brooke Stephens (84) competing as individuals.

Tuesday's final round tees off with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (PDT).
